How big are air casters?
Aircasters - whether round steel, square aluminum or stainless steel -
range in size from a standard 12-inch air caster module right through to the big guys on the block - 48-inch square
or diameter. The size of the air bearing defines what its weight capacity is going to be. As the
air bearing is made in larger form, so the load modules increase to accommodate the size and offer good
stability.
The definition of an air caster generally includes the air bearing which is
fitted to the underside of the load module. It is the air bearing which causes the loads to float and
move. There are various sizes and types of air bearing available and each type tends to do a different job
for you.
For instance, a 12-inch air bearing matches the 12-inch
load module and a single standard 12-inch air caster will have an individual lift
and weight capacity of 1000 US pounds (453 kgs) Remember though, that an individual air caster cannot be used
on its own; it must form part of a system with at least three other air casters. Sets of four offer a
comfortable level of safety, stability and manageability.
Shown on the right is a standard 12-ich air caster module.
Moving up the size scale we have 16", 18", 22", 28", 34", 40", and 44" giants.
A 44-inch air caster has a lift and weight capacity up to 36,000 pounds (16
tonnes) all on its own. However even these air caster giants must follow the rules and be used in a series of at
least four.
Heavy duty air caster systems generally double the lift and weight
capacity of a standard system.
Below is a typical square aluminum air caster module and how it is structured with components.
